Adopt a Six Day Week

Posted on April 13, 2021

Description:

I love the idea of being productive, but I tend to burn myself out. It’s hard to find the right pace that allows steady progress with enough time to relax and recharge.

Back in 2010 my friend (and shareholder) Josh came up with a compelling idea about how the world might better balance the desire for productivity with the needs of our social well-being. He invented the Six Day Week, a radically simple way to tilt the calendar towards a better work-life balance. And all you have to do is kill Tuesday.

Read more about this idea here.

This proposal is to adopt Josh’s idea of the Six Day Week. I will work for four days and then take two days off. Research supports the idea that four days is more productive than five. And because I have no standing weekly engagements I can let my personal weekends drift within the confines of the Gregorian calendar.

If this vote passes I’ll spend the rest of April and all of May and June experimenting with a four day workweek followed by two days off. I’ll report back to the shareholders in my weekly emails on how it feels and how well it works.

This is confusing to me. The idea of eliminating Tuesday is interesting but not practical. What if you have to get a flight on a Tuesday or schedule something else on a Tuesday? If you actually want a 4 day workweek, why not just work Tuesday-Friday and take Saturday-Monday off? Voting no unless somebody can convince me otherwise.

Sure! I don't want Tuesday.

I suspect this won't actually change much since you're already setting your own hours, but I'm curious to see how it goes

awmahan its not like Tuesday is not going to exist. It still will but not in the context of work. The way I understand it is that it is just a 4 day on 2 day off work schedule. Easier to visualize by killing off a day of the week. Tuesday will definitely still exist. We are just voting on whether or not to adopt a 4 day on 2 day off work schedule.

Yes. Be the revolution. Kill the five-day work week. KMikeyM for President of Business.

Tuesday here is metaphorical, I think Mike just chose it because it's clearly the worst day of the week. The idea is to unmoor Mike's weeks from the 52 weeks of the Gregorian calendar, e.g. to compare the two: 1234567 1234567 1234567 1234567 1234567 1234567 1234567 1234567 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 Mike's week would match up with Gregorian weeks every 8 Gregorian weeks, or said another way, in 8 Gregorian weeks Mike would experience 9 Mike-weeks.

So, I work a 4 day week, and it's a nice thing but one of my rest days is Tuesday so it wouldn't suit me very much to eliminate it.. I will vote no because I think the better solution would be to go back to the old irish system of not working Wednesdays. That way it would not feel like you were working more than your were off, even though you would still have 4 productive days in the week.

@awmahan - I don't think this means "pretend Tuesday doesn't exist." I think it's a proposal to simply work 4 days, then take 2 days off. I do think it's worth asking how hard and fast this is. Like, what would Mike do if he had a big meeting proposed for, say, a Thursday, and he planned to have it off?

I'd vote yes if it was a 4 day week with 3 days off. As it stands, meh.

I'm all for changing a work schedule, but wouldn't you benefit more from 4 days on, 3 day weekends? This way you and everyone you work with knows when you're available? I can't support this weirdness

Voting yes under these assumptions: - "Killing Tuesday" seems literal, per the linked post explaining the proposal in more depth - I believe that yielding Tuesdays back to kmikeym will provide larger longitudinal returns in terms of his mental health and motivation - I think the logistical issues akin to "is kmikeym available on Tuesday?" are solvable by simply telling the people he works with that he's not available on Tuesdays

A lot of the emergency personnel have a schedule like that. Work three days, take two off. Work four days, take three off, etc. Seems to work for them. I'm all about a more broken up week.

@tsanth - but i might be available on what you think of tuesday, just for me that could be whatever day of the week I'm on...

If anything, get rid of Monday!

Mike's description simultaneously says "I have no standing weekly engagements" AND "I’ll report back to the shareholders in my WEEKLY emails on how it feels and how well it works." So would that email now go out every six days instead of every seven? Wouldn't that actually create MORE work for you? Because if this schedule continues past the April/May/June trial run, you'd have to send 60 emails a year, rather than 52.

I am for this 4 days working, 2 days not schedule. Trying to do away with Tuesdays seems impractical. Mike, how will this impact things like weekly investor updates, or anything else that happens on a weekly, semi-weekly, monthly cadence?

@weston - this is the great question and let's take a look at a real world example: the shareholder poker game. currently the game is held on Tuesday every week... should this vote pass I will no longer have tuesdays, and weeks will be different for me than for everyone else. so, instead of a "Tuesday Night Poker Game" we will move to a "Every Seven Days Poker Game." For everyone else, things will stay the same, but for me, the poker game will drift from Monday to Sunday to Saturday to Friday, etc. Also, my weekly updates will happen every six days, and my daily emails ($) will happen every four days with two days off.

oh, actually the "drift" will happen in the other direction: Monday to Wednesday to Thursday, etc.
