Tune In or Tune Out of Election Night

Posted on November 1, 2020

Description:

This is a vote on how to spend the evening of November 3rd, 2020. I know it will be stressful, and the best way to deal with stress is to create a project. So here are the options:

A Yes Vote: I will "Tune In" to the coverage all night. I will set up my computer in front of the tv and pull up multiple channels and fill in electoral maps as they are announced on air. I will keep an eye on twitter, will be engaged in KmikeyM slack, and maybe even live stream my reaction. By fulling engaging I feel like this is "living in the moment" and with the comforting glow of screens and my online community we will see what happens on this historic night.

A No Vote: I will "Tune Out" of the coverage. No TV, no social media, and I will go as long as I can without knowing the results of the election. Can I last 24 hours in blissful ignorance of the fate of our nation? Longer? I will document my attempt to shield myself from the news and update you only with my suspicions and fears until the result is spoiled (aka confirmed) to me.

I'm voting "yes" because it seems like the most on-brand thing for Mike to do, but I really wish there was something between "basically pretend the election isn't happening" and "follow the election's every development as it happens, no matter how inconsequential or scary it gets."

I'm fine with the only options being two extremes of the same coin. We all deserve a break from the madness. Voting no so you can take a mental vacation for 24 hours.
@DREAMSLOTH or longer! :)

This doesn't do any good for your mental health and you'll probably get 0 awareness from the media. I'd rather have you doing something productive or enjoying your time doing something pleasant (sleeping doesn't sound bad at all)

daft vote

I'm voting "aye" because otherwise you'll be the only person in American NOT tuning in. TRUMP 2020! Time to save the republic and restore ORDER!

Voting "no" because I get the drift that you're already prone to be apprehensive about the results, so taking a mental health break is a sensible thing to do. Justification: since 1) you've already voted and 2) nothing you can do on election night will move the needle either way, I see no benefit that tuning-in will get you which will outweigh any anxiety you will likely get from watching the election results trickle in.

Youโ€™re going to hear about this election for the next 4 years, however it ends up. Go enjoy your night doing literally anything else

I am on the fence about this vote because I am on the fence about how I will be spending the evening as well.

Voting yes because it's probably going to be okay (past results are not indicative of future returns) and I'm going to be spending the day with the internet, maybe also the power, turned off. So somebody should be watching the news.

i voted yes, but i donโ€™t think you should be too obsessive about it. take breaks. take care of yourself. the election is important of course, but it likely will not be over in one night.

Like Aaron, I am on the fence about the vote because I am on the fence about my own activity, but I appreciate the all or nothing extremes.

Would rather you spend time reorganising your kitchen cabinets

I'm apprehensive myself. And (like many others) waffling a bit about what I'm going to do. I think I'd rather not worry about keeping tuned in to your coverage on top of my other worries. :-)

Realistically, it's a waste of time, and this thing likely won't even be decided on Election Night. But it's an especially historic night in our country's history. You'll regret not tuning in to experience it.

Turn off, tune out, drop out.

I wish I could skip it, but I can't. Glad to help you follow that path.

Self care over chaos, and thus an investment in your long term mental health. Also, results will be coming in all week (sure we might have a sense) so 24 hours is no biggie. Finally, whatever happens on election night, you'll get four yeas to deal with it after this break.
