Should I learn to ski?

Posted on February 28, 2017

Description:

For Marijke’s birthday we’re doing to the mountain to enjoy some winter sport. Marijke is a skier and has been going since she was a kid. I went a handful of times in Alaska, but never regularly.

As I approach a casual relationship with downhill snow sports I wonder which mode better suits me: Skiing or Snowboarding?

Skiing is a classy gentlemen’s sport. You can tell because Brooks Brothers sells ski clothes. James Bond is a skier. And I have some distant experience with it.

Snowboarding is the future, invented in 1965 and made most famous by Vin Diesel is the film xXx. Snowboarding is clearly “cooler” than skiing and also has less risk of serious injury.

There are two votes for this decision. Whichever is higher will be what I learn to do. If both are below 30% then I will just sit in the bar and sip on a nice scotch.

A yes vote is to learn to ski. A not vote is to not learn to ski. (see other vote to vote for or against snowboarding)

Skiing is a lifelong sport and your (life?!) partner is a skier.

Is there any way we can convince you to do neither?

Yes! " If both are below 30% then I will just sit in the bar and sip on a nice scotch." So just vote no on both if you don't me risking the dangers of mountain sports.

I think you will have more fun skiing if you are going with a skiier. Also tends to be a shorter learning curve with skiing, means more time shredding less time eating snow.

Learn to ski first - it's much safer and the chances of you getting a fun day in are much better. Learning to snowboard is much more difficult and is more dangerous to learn. Take it from me - I grew up at a ski area and coached snowboarding for years. You will love skiing and Marijke will be very happy. Once you feel confident with skiing, then you can shred the gnar and win her disdain for the rest of your years together.
