I have been invited to participate in a documentary film called The New Corporation, which is the sequel to the 2003 documentary The Corporation:
The film’s creators, professor Joel Bakan and director Mark Achbar, will be exploring two of the shifts in the nature and operations of corporations over the last decade:
First, that major corporations now see it as part of their mission to promote and pursue social and environment values. And second, that more and more domains of life are being organized in accordance with market and corporate norms.
The creators of the film believe KmikeyM illustrates the latter point and would like to include it as an example in the film.
The original film did not paint a flattering portrait of the modern day corporation, though it did provide examples of companies that were doing things right (like Ray Anderson’s Interface) and corporate leaders genuinely committed to steering their companies in the right direction (such as shell’s Sir Mark Moody Stuart and Goodyear’s Samir Gibara). Still, there’s always some risk that my portrayal may not be cast in the most flattering light. On the other hand, even if the original film can be interpreted as anti-corporate, I not only enjoyed it but I believe it’s important to critique the things we love.
I look forward to the discussion and the response from the shareholders.
