Do I Believe in Ghosts?

Posted on October 12, 2021

Description:

When I was crossing the country I stopped for a night in Mobile, Alabama and woke up in the middle of the night.

I saw... something. Up until now I would have said I do not believe in ghosts, but after this experience I am not sure. So I'm putting it up for a vote.

I'm more concerned, frankly, that you saw something weird and refused to investigate it in the moment because you were worried that coming face-to-face with something that you have already decided you do not believe in would "antagonize" your worldview. I am voting that yes, you believe in ghosts, because on the rare chance that this ever happens to you again, I want you to GET OUT OF BED AND GO TALK TO THE GHOST.

Your narrative establishes that you believe you saw something that could been antagonized. The set of phenomena that could meet that condition and not have been a ghost is so small that, practically speaking, whatever it is you actually believe, this belief is no different than believing you saw a ghost.

Next time get a selfie with the Ghost and send it out via Instagram

For the lulz.

This says more about your voters than you..

I don't believe in ghosts, but you clearly do. I'm a Yes.

If the vote was whether you were questioning or evaluating whether ghosts exist, then I may have been inclined to vote yes. Believe, however, suggests you, well, believeโ€”that ghosts exist to you without question. Thus, I fall on the side of you do not yet believe, but based on your recent experience decided to investigate within yourself whether you think they are real. As to this being a shareholder vote, I would also advocate that even as a publicly traded person, you still maintain the unassignable rights to determine your core beliefs. So my no is also in part a vote to the null set (i.e., non-votable issue). Cheers.

There are many unexplained phenomena in the universe and we humans know very little about the space we inhabit. The binary question and vote is not a good indicator on a nuanced subject like this. I would suggest framing it more along the lines of possibility. You may have thought you don't believe in ghosts in the past, but how could you ever be certain about that assumption? That type of certainty is not productive. Accepting that you are not sure what you saw and that not everything can be rationally explained is my recommendation. As the Dalai Lama said "embrace uncertainty."

I suspect the intent of this question is to determine whether you should SAY you believe in ghosts or not, but despite the many assurances that you don't believe in ghosts, your actions suggest that you do.

I'm with Claire.

+@Claire, I'd like a chance to vote on the subsequent rules regarding the results of this vote. The first rule should be you have to talk to them. โ€ข I grew up going to Santeria rituals + visiting old cuban witches with my mom growing up + I believe that shit. I have practical theory about how + why you can see them though. Welcome, it's a good thing to believe in.
